PUBLI ' SERVICESHEALTH
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
JOGI KHANNA M.D.,M.P.H.
Health Officer
P.O. Box 2009 • (1601 East Hazelton Avenue) 0 Stockton,California 95201
(209)468-3400
cc
MARY LEHR
1250 EDGEWOOD DRIVE
LODI CA 95240 JUN 1 1g
RE: Arts and Artists SITE CODE: 2423
204 East Lodi Ave
Lodi CA 95240
San Joaquin County Public Health Services,Environmental Health Division(PHS/EHD)has
completed review of the "Groundwater Assessment and Quarterly Monitoring Report"
prepared by Geological Audit and which PHS/EHD received on June 2, 1993. PHS/EHD
has prepared the following comments for your consideration.
Three monitoring wells, MW6 - MW8, were installed in April 1993, in order to determine
the extent of groundwater contamination. Soil contamination was not detected during the
installation of these wells. Groundwater contamination was not detected in the samples
collected from these wells on April 27, 1993.
Groundwater contamination continues to be evidenced as indicated in samples collected
April 27, 1993 for laboratory analysis from MWI, MW4, and MW5. While MW3 was not
sampled on April 27, 1993, subjective evaluation on March 23, 1993 indicated odors
associated with petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. Furthermore, based on groundwater
elevation evaluations, MW3 should have contained sufficient groundwater to sample.
PHS/EHD concurs that both soil and groundwater remediation will be necessary. Soil
contamination is documented from 9 feet to 50 feet below ground surface. The horizontal
extent of soil contamination is unknown. The extent of groundwater contamination has been
established by the results from the recently installed monitoring wells.
Please submit by July 23, 1993 a work plan addendum for the installation of a vapor
extraction well to assess the viability of vapor extraction as a soil remediation method. Once
the vapor extraction well has been installed, all the monitoring wells sampled again, and a
groundwater pump test performed using MW 1, a "Problem Assessment Report" should be
submitted by October 1, 1993 evaluating remedial alternatives.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health rare Services 0
