PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
The report included the results of soil samples collected on May 17 - 19, 1995 during the installation of air
sparge wells, SP1 and SP2 and groundwater samples collected on July 11, 1995. The analytical results
indicated soil contamination to a vertical depth of 50 feet below ground surface. Groundwater contamination
continued to be evidenced.
Please note that Table 1 contained errors which should be corrected to preserve the historical integrity of the
record. The actual benzene reporting limit for SPI at 50 feet and SP2 at 50 feet was 0.02 ppm rather than
0,005 ppm. In the future, summary tables must include the reporting limit of each sample. An amendment
of Tables 1 and 3 should be included with the next quarterly report submitted. Also, PHS/EHD suggests
strongly that depth to water information be contained in the same table as groundwater analytical results.
Also, note that Figures 2 and 3 indicated the location of two monitoring wells designated MW7. A correction
to these figures must be made and care taken to provide adequate quality control review, so that errors such
as noted above can be corrected prior to regulatory release.
With regard to the request to reduce the sampling frequency of MW6 and MW8, PHS/EHD does not grant the
reduction based on current results. Slight contamination was detected in MW8 which may indicate the edge
of the contamination plume. Monitoring of the plume's boundary is necessary to demonstrate remedial
effectiveness.
It is PHS/EHD's intent to provide directions which will enable efficient and accurate evaluation of site
conditions. PHS/EHD looks forward to the submittal of an update of the soil and groundwater remediation
in progress.
If you have any questions or wish to schedule a site inspection, please contact Mary Meays at(209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
01- 1\4
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Diane M.
