Our comments on the
document are provided below.
Back rg ound
Busy Bee has completed its Phase 1 site characterization work and installed several groundwater
monitoring wells as outlined in Busy Bee's Phase 2 Site Characterization Work Plan. Busy Bee now
proposes, in the RDFS Workplan,to perform further work at the site as follows:
• Perform a soil vapor extraction pilot study along the southern portion of the sewer line located in
the alleyway east of the former Busy Bee facility. The SVE pilot test would include the
installation of 3 dual completion SVE wells, 2 deep zone SVE wells, approximately 600 feet of
buried pipeline and a vapor phase carbon treatment system;
• Perform an ozone sparging pilot test along the southern portion of the sewer line located in the
alleyway east of the former Busy Bee facility. The ozone sparging pilot test would include the
installation of 6 ozone sparging points (2 of which would also be dual completions to allow deep
zone SVE testing), one ozone monitoring well, approximately 300 feet of buried pipeline and
ozone generation equipment.
• Perform a pilot study of groundwater extraction for containment at the downgradient edge of the
shallow PCE plume. The groundwater extraction pilot test would include the installation of a
shallow zone groundwater extraction well, approximately 1000 feet of buried pipeline, and a
liquid phase carbon treatment system.
• In support of the proposed pilot testing, and to further characterize the extent of the contaminant
plume downgradient from the site, Busy Bee also proposes to install 3 shallow groundwater
monitoring wells and one deep groundwater monitoring well.
California Environmental Protection Agency
a Recycled Paper
