typically fluvial origins, laid down by southwest-trending
streams carrying andesitic debris from the Sierra Nevada. The
units are stratified, but discontinuous over large areas , with
cut and fill channeling. Mudflow deposits derived from the
Sierra Nevada occur as interbeds.
The Laguna Formation overlies the Mehrten Formation, and is
truncated above by the Arroyo Seco Gravel. The Laguna
Formation is characterized by beds of arkosic alluvial gravel,
sand and silt. Pebbles and cobbles of quartz and metamorphic
fragments dominate the gravelly units, but the matrix of the
gravel and the Laguna ' s finer grained sediments are arkosic,
in contrast to the andesitic deposits of the underlying
Mehrten Formation. The San Luis Ranch Alluvium is comprised of
fine to coarse-grained fan, mudflow, terrace and floodplain
deposits.
Overburden in the Qroiect site area consists of the Redding
Soil Series, a gravelly loam with cobble-gravelly surface
textures. This soil has a USDA Capability Rating of Class IV.
This soil has been characterized as a red, acid, iron-silica
hardpan, with thick continuous clay coatings on ped surfaces.
Topsoil will not be removed from the project site.
The northern portion of the project site consists of
moderately to steeply rolling topography which slopes away
northerly toward the Calaveras River. The southern portion of
the project site consists of flat to gently rolling topography
intersected by low-lying swales and drainage courses.
Excavation from the northern half of the site has resulted in
the removal of the rolling hilltops. Excavation from the
southern portion, of the site is anticipated to take place as
an open pit/gravel-sand pit operation.
The topography of the site is illustrated on the U.S.
Geological Survey 7 1/2 Minute Quadrangle Map of the Valley
Springs Southwest Quad. Elevations on the property range from
approximately 180 feet above sea level in the northwest corner
of the site to approximately 320 feet above sea level in the
southeast corner.
12 . Environmental Description - Briefly describe the environment
of site and surrounding area. Include existing area land use,
soil, vegetation, ground water elevation, surface water
characteristics, average annual rainfall and other factors
pertaining to environmental impacts and their mitigation and
reclamation:
The dominant plant community on the property is non-native
grassland Additional plant communities represented include
northern vernal pool and Swale and riparian scrub.
