REMEDIATIOM ALTERNATIVES
In-Situ Vapor Extraction Soil Remediation System
EVAX has developed a comprehensive vapor extraction process that can be
used on site to remediate soil that has been contaminated by a variety of
fuels and solvents. The process is dependable, affordable, and creates
minimal impact on daily business operations. The extractithe soil n can be
achieved under existing structures and pavements, further,
cleaned on site, rather than being excavated and transported to a
hazardous landfill .
i
The process entails installation of temporary vapor extraction probes at
ified depths for use as extraction points.
specified locations and to spec
3 The probes are installed using pneumatic equipment. In addition,
existing groundwater monitoring wells are retrofitted for use as
extraction points. A network of underground piping is installed to
connect the extraction points to the system equipment. Sail gases are
extracted from the extraction points and routed through the underground
piping to the system equipment villere the hydrocarbons in the extracted
air stream are abated. The extracted air stream is then disbursed to the
atmosphere. The system operates 24 hours per day, seven days per geek
until the remediation objectives have been achieved. The system is
monitored and adjusted on a regularly scheduled basis to maximize system
operation efficiency and ensure that system operation is within permitted
emission conditions.
Based on an extrapolated average vapor conof centration of 10,000 ppm with a
flow rate of 100 cf-n, approximately 160 pounds stage
of vapor extraction
petroleum hydrocarbons
would be removed daily during the initial stage
system operation at the site. It is estimated that average soil
hydrocarbon vapor concentration would decrease to less than 6,000 pp
within several weeks. Removal would be approximately 96 pounds of
petroleum hydrocarbons per day at this time.
Passive biological degradation of the gasoline hydrocarbons will occur
simultaneously with vapor extraction. Bioremediation of the gasoline
hydrocarbons will occur as a result of an enhancement of the activity of
the indigenous microbe population due to the aerobic environment created
by vapor extraction. No active bioremediation techniques will be ;
employed during the vapor extraction process. -
Throughout the process, reports are generated to define the extent of
contamination, monitor the progress of the clean-up provide data needed to maintain air quality standards, and comply with regulatory agency
_ - . requirements: EVAX systems..conform to state and federal regulations and
.
J - 7 -
