NMI_ _
EM
5. PRESENT WORK PLAN
Exxon Company, U.S.A. has contracted EA to collect additional
subsurface soil samples at 909 West Hammer Lane. On the recom-
mendation of E.W. James of the California Regional Water Quality
Control Board - Central Valley Region (E.W. James letter), EA
plans to drill three soil borings at the locations marked on the
map in Figure 6. Two of these borings will be located within or
near the former tank pit to assess whether any contaminated soil
remains in this area. The third boring will be located neat the
site of a former soil boring SB-2 which was apparently completed
(but not sampled) by GTI in January 1988.
_ EA plans to sub-contract Kvilhaug Well Drilling and Pump Company,
r
Inc. , of. Concord, California (C-57 License #482390) to complete
" the soil boring work. Soil borings will be drilled with a rotary
Y
Fz drill rising an 8.25-inch hollow-stem auger. Borings will be
drilled to the depth of the capillary fringe zone just above the
water table. EA's most recent gauging of the wells on the pro-
perty ('Table 1 ) indicates a depth of approximately 54 feet. The
f augers and drill bit will be steam-cleaned between drill holes to
E` prevent cross--contamination. All drill cuttings will .be logged
by a trained geologist using the Unified Soil Classification
i'
System.
F; Undisturbed soil samples will be collected during drilling using
a modified California split-spoon sampler lined with brass sample
tubes. Samples will be collected every five feet and at the
bottom of the hole The sampling. equipment will be scrubbed with
x detergent and rinsed with tap water and deionized water between
_.:-samples ..:_.. .Samples..:will be-.f ield-screened ,for- organic-:vapor con=
tent with a Foxboro OVA, then the tubes will be sealed with
aluminum foil, plastic end caps, and plastic tape.
