Soil Suitability/Nitrate Loading Study Irerracon
Vacant Commercial Property■ Stockton, California
December 7, 2018 ■ Terracon Project No. NA187056
2.3.3 Current On-Site Sources of Nitrate
There were no current on-site sources of nitrate. Historical site uses included former residential
septic systems, a former commercial septic system, former agricultural land use, and natural
processes.
2.3.4 Future On-Site Sources of Nitrate
Future on-site sources of nitrate are discussed in Section 1.3.7.
2.3.4.1 Quantity and Quality of Wastewater from Project
The following discussion is for determining the long-term wastewater flow generated from the
proposed St. Luke's Church construction (6,000 gpd). Refer to Section 1.3.7 for further
discussion. The estimated sewage flow rates for use categories are available from a number of
references. The uses presented below were guided by the San Joaquin County On-Site
Wastewater Disposal Standards (2017), Crites and Tchobanoglous (1998), and EPA (1980). The
following table presents the proposed septic wastewater use for the site. The rates presented
from the references provide general guidance but do not always reflect a match in usage. Careful
examination, professional judgment, and experience are necessary to select a reasonable flow
rate estimate. The flow rates selected for the uses associated with this project are presented
below. These flow rates are average daily rates over the entire year and should not be used for
septic system design. These average daily rates are for nitrate loading purposes. Septic system
design should take into account maximum daily rates. Average daily flow was calculated for the
proposed project based on the anticipated occupancy for the site. Maximum occupancies had not
yet been established for the individual buildings.
Table 9.
Typical Quantity of Effluent.
Estimated Average wastewater use per Average days
Category Maximum person per day* of use per Average Daily Flow
Occupancy (gallons) year
St. Luke's
Church (600 person x 10 gal x 365
Sanctuary 600 10 365 days)/365 days per year=
Kitchen 6,000 gpd
Youth Center
Average Daily Flow 6,000 gallons per day
Note:gpd is gallons per day.*Value cited from the San Joaquin County Onsite Wastewater Treatment Standards(2017)Table 6.6.
The average total nitrogen concentration of domestic wastewater is normally considered to be 20-
85 mg/L-N with 35 to 45 mg/L-N being typical (Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998).
