4
extracted from VEW-4 during this time period. The well also yielded approximately
35 scfm soil vapor flow. Very low hydrocarbon concentrations (<10 ppmv) were
detected in the field. TPHg and benzene concentrations were non-detect in the lab
sample collected on February 2nd. No influence (induced drawdown or vacuum) was
observed in proximal wells while extracting from VEW-4 indicating no connectivity
between this deeper well and the shallower extraction wells. The screen interval for
VEW-4 starts at 45 fbg, which is where the screen intervals for the shallower extraction
wells end.
3.4 GREENHOUSE GAS(GHG) EMISSIONS
In April 2008, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued their
technical primer, "Green Remediation: Incorporating Sustainable Environmental Practices
into Remediation of Contaminated Sites". The EPA defined Green Remediation as 'the
practice of considering all environmental effects of remedy implementation and
incorporating options to maximize the net environmental benefit of cleanup actions". In
response to this primer, CRA has begun incorporating sustainability into remedial
evaluations. Therefore, the carbon footprint for the DPE system has been included in
this shutdown request.
A carbon footprint is the quantity of GHGs attributable to the actions of an individual,
organization, or project. The quantity of a project's GHGs (carbon dioxide, methane,
nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, and perfluorocarbon) is
expressed as a kilograms (kg) carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent. The GHGs are
converted into a carbon dioxide equivalent using a global warming potential factor.
A carbon footprint inventory or calculation is an accounting of the amounts and sources
of emissions/sinks of GHGs,expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents, attributable to the
existence and operation of an organization. The completion of such an inventory
provides an essential foundation for the management and reporting of GHG emission.
The boundaries of a carbon footprint inventory define what activities are to be included
and excluded in the calculation. The boundaries of the remediation alternatives' carbon
footprint inventory include onsite activities and the transportation of materials and
waste.
In calculating the carbon footprint for the DPE system, emission factors were estimated
from the equipment specifications or taken from the 1998 GHG Protocol launched by the
World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable
Development.
