CALIFORNIA RE AL WATER QUALITY CONTROL SOAR Cal/EPA
CENTRAL VALLIGION \
3443 Rouricr Road.Suis A
Sacr==W,CA 95827-3098
horm(916) 55-3000 ?em W SM Gavemr
FAX(916)255-3015
18 july 1997 -
To Whom It May Conc°_n*n
ANALYSIS REQUnUD FOR OXYGENATE COMPOUN-DS USED IN CALIFORNIA
GASOLINE- EPA METHOD 8260
At a recent meeting at the Department of Health Services in Berkeley, the statewide analytical
methods committee for establishing analytical TPH and additive Standards, was informed that
oxygenate GpmDp„nds other than MTBE,have been and are being added to California
gasoline which may constiiute a threat to ;oundwaterss. The list includes, in order of
analytical identification:
1. Methanol
2. Ethanol
I Tertiary Butanol
a, MTBE
5. Di-isopropyl ether (Dther(ETRE)
6. Ethyl Tertiary Bury
7. Ter`sary Amyl Methyl.Ether (TA\4
The first three are alcohols and the latter four are ether compounds- Eihanol has been used for
several years in Califorr a. MTBE, as you chow, has be11 used as an m c gasoline. Since
ee
since the late 1970s and is now used at a higher percentage as an oxyo
enate 1995,TAl ,manufacused by Chevron, has been added to California fuels_ DIFE has been
used on the East Coast, butzecently has been found in Southern Califoulia ground water (May
1997). To date,we have no information regarding the use of=E in California.
The introduction of the additives present analytical problems for laboratories because or'the
number of analvses required and internal interference. For instance,T.AME is difficult to
distdnowish because it co-elutes with benzene in the EPA-8020 analytical method commonly
used today. Therefore, the analytical methods committee con==ed that EPA-8260 is regiired
to determine which compound has been used This analyte cal method is developed that
cost ore sample analysis;but,until another
comprehensive Q ovisional method of
can distiuish en ngbetwethe compounds,EPA 8260 is d1e sinIe pr
analysis for these comoounds.
This problem is further compounded because the oil refineries s''Zip gasoline around the state
and then trade gasoline between oec-gnphic s. For instance,if gasoline s needed in the
-a
evron in the
San Francesco Bay area by SneIl,Shell will obtain some Baso line inmouthe *n1California. They
area and, in exchange, Chevron will receive some Shell
'• o Ory rrus$on s ra pre and ourmrrr rhe==UY of Gfifondes:Marc arvaet.mrd
2eryced.enm •' 'roc:tie umait aj mesem mrd iimve,ore+°"t
actrve:irev avow allarmrian and efcar .
