URS Consultants should evaluate the possibility of water Ievel fluctuation Al
to ensure that water levels will not fall below or rise above the screen
intervals suggested in the workplan. it Wefurther suggest that URS
Consultants review the McCormick & Baxter reports to determine proposed
depths of deep and shallow monitoring wells.
Response: Based on communication with Mr. Gary Reents of the Regional Water
Quality Control Board and review of reports for the adjacent McCormick &
Baxter site (CH22MHILL Summary Report dated September 1986 and Offsite
Wells Workplanll ask 1 Report dated May 1989),;,groundwater levels fluctuate
approximately plus-or-minus 2 to 3 feet during the year and are. not
significantly influenced by tidal fluctuations.;,Therefore, placement of the
proposed well screens with five feet above and below the water surface (as
recommended in the workplan) will ailo;w shallow wells to be useable. As f
for well completion depths, determination of the depths of the shallow wells
€ was based on the noted presence of groundwater in the tank excavation (at
a depth of approximately 10 to 121eet) .during tank pulling activities.
0
Although groundwater elevation data is available for the McCormick &
Baxter (M & B) site, groundwater system.'characteristics of the two sites are
different; making use of most of the.M&','B site'phydrologic data impractical.
The Union Ice site and M & B site are separated by Mormon Slough, a zone
Ilf of groundwater recharge (.Gary Reents RWQCB Personal Communication
i
65550.01/07249fUnionIce.giw 1
