circumventing the law t-1 )w other groups in even if there ir -ohibition against it. Some
have a fear of VFW eir Aventing the law even if they do not ._ .e a liquor license by
allowing "donations" to be made for drinks. Several said they do not want the added traffic
on West Ripon Road which is already a heavily travelled road. They also do not want the
extra traffic on S.Olive Avenue. West Ripon Road is the only ingress and egress for those
neighbors between West Ripon Road and Highway 99, because S. Olive was closed at
Highway 99. Some anticipate more accidents, and some even have a fear of people driving
under the influence striking their children. Some said VFW has no business in an agricultural
area, and also has no business being in a location with neighbors as close as ours to the site.
They should be off to themselves where they can make all the noise they want. Some bad a
fear that VFW would be allowed unreasonable hours to be open. They were afraid of the
activities which could go on outside the building, especially if drinking is involved, such as
poor conduct or wandering onto neighboring properties and causing problems. They do not
like the idea of the heavier traffic they anticipate stirring up more dust and noise. Complaints
are anticipated to come from VFW and their associates with regards to farming operations,
such as complaints about spraying or dust from the field operations or the hours of operation,
or burning brush etc.
A statement was also made by Mr. Moyer that the Church had been vacant for
several months. That is also an untruth. The Church conducts services every third Sunday,
and also I frequently see members of the group in the church yard working. I believe Mr.
Moyer made the statement that if the church was occupied by VFW it would help in
curtailing vandalism. To my knowledge, there has been no vandalism, and I have never seen
graffiti on the church. On the contrary, I anticipate a problem with vandalism with all the
added traffic in and out of the area.
This is a very quiet, peaceful area, not very heavily populated, with several
orchards either adjacant or nearby. Many of us moved here thirty or forty years ago, and
are too old to relocate or do not have the wherewithal to do so. Also, why should we be the
\ ones to have our lives disrupted by an organization we do not believe should be in an
J agricultural area in the first place.
I want to make it very clear that I do not object to veterans or their charitable
acts. In fact, my deceased husband was a veteran, so that is not the issue.
The issue is that we object to the way this issue was handled with no prior notice.
We also object to VFW social activities which we believe will be carried on. Janet Spyksma
informed me she checked with the Alcoholic Beverage & Control Board, and was informed
that the VFW had come in and picked up an application for a license. If they do not intend to
sell liquor, which I have been told some of them claim, WHY then did they pick up the
application. Doesn't it stand to reason that the next step will be to file the application for the
license.
Attached are copies of petitions Janet Spyksma and I have obtained. Many of the neighbors
have not
been contacted yet, because I believe some of them are away for the winter or holidays etc., There
are three pages
of signatures. I have been informe however, by other neighbors that some of them also are also
opposed to VFW being there.
Please reconsider the unfavorable impact on the neighbors of this change to the amendment,
and look at the whole picture, not just that the veterans want a place to meet. Let them stay where
they are, where they are not close enough to bother others, or find a remote area where they would
be accepted.
Respectfully Submitted
