Hazelton
Stockton, CA g52o5
Jan 8, 2003
Dear Members of the Planning Commission;
I am writing to you for the purpose of opposing a proposed use permit, which is being
sought by the VFW Post 1051. The VFW proposes to occupy a property on the corners of
West Ripon Rd. and Olive Ave.just outside of the Ripon City limits. As a resident of this
area I am opposed to having the VFW occupy these premises. They allow the members of
this group and their guests to consume alcoholic beverages on the premises and though
they profess to be self policing I feel that they pose a significant risk to our community.
As property owners in the vicinity we make our homes here. I feel that our children as
well as ourselves will be put at risk from drunk driving by allowing this post to be located
outside city limits where it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for Sheriff s
response to residents complaints. As a resident of Olive Ave. I feel that the commission
should be aware that there is no other viable means of reaching our homes except by
passing the proposed site and that the consumption of alcoholic beverages is not my only
concern. The traffic, with over 50 active members will be much greater than it currently
is. The proposed site has been a church;this church has been used only one Sunday per
month for the last few years and has not created a problem. The VFW plans to operate on
a daily basis with the possible intent of renting the hall to others, and the consumption of
alcoholic beverages. If the hall becomes a rental hall the neighbors then have to contend
with not only the possibility of drunk drivers, and increased traffic but also the noise level
increase from possible bands, or D. J.'s.
It is my opinion that the VFW would cause a change for the worse in the lifestyles of
the families residing in this area and that the proposed use should not be allowed in
agricultural areas, especially when there are residential buildings within a five hundred
foot radius of the building that will be housing these events.
cerely
Rebecca L.
