PROPOSED INVESTIGATION
Apex proposes hydraulically pushing seven Geo Probe borings on-site to further define the extent
of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil-and groundwater beneath the site (Figure 7). Apex
proposes to advance the seven soil probe borings to an anticipated total depth of 15 feet below
grade (bg), or until groundwater is reached.
_S.oil_.core.sampling.will be.conducted using 5-foot sections of decontaminated 314-inch I.D.
galvanized steel probe pipe. The probe pipe is connected to a one foot, 1/4-inclame er,
galvanized steel soil core tube. Stainless steel decontaminated insert rods are placed through the
probe pipe and sampling core. The probe pipe, soil core and insert rods are together
pneumatically driven to the depth the soil core is desired. The insert rods are removed and the
probe pipe and core tube is driven one foot to obtain the soil core sample.
The probe pipe containing the soil core sample is removed from the hole and the soil sample is
disconnected from the probe pipe. The ends of the core are sealed using Teflon tape and plastic
end caps. After all sampling is completed, the probe pipes are removed and the boring is grouted
using Portland cement.
The soil and groundwater samples will be packed in ice, and submitted under chain-of-custody to
Sparger Technology, Inc. (Sparger), a state-certified Laboratory for analysis. Soil samples will be
j classified at five-foot intervals and screened utilizing a photo-ionization(PID) meter. All
fieldwork will be conducted according to the Apex Standard of Operating Procedures (SOP)
included in Appendix A.
Prior to drilling, the Underground Service Alert, USA, will be contacted for identification of
buried utilities at or entering the project site from the public right-of-way. As a further precaution
against probing into or through potential buried obstructions, the first five feet of each Geo Probe
will be augured by hand.
SOIL & GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Soil samples will be screened in the field for selection of the one bottom sample and the soil
sample with the highest PID screening level. The soil and groundwater samples will be,submitted,
under chain-of-custody, to a state-certified laboratory for analysis of a)TPH, as gasoline; TPH,
as diesel by modified EPA Method 8015; b) BTEX and MTBE by EPA Method 8020.
Due to the drilling method (Geo Probe) utilized for this investigation, soil cuttings are not
generated; therefore, stockpiled soil and subsequent management are not anticipated at the site.
Boring permits will be obtained from the County prior to the Geo Probe.sampling. Once the
analytical data is received, a Results Report will be prepared documenting the results of this
investigation.
