i
i
/ Interim Remediation Plan and Second Quarter 2001 Groundwater Monitoring Report
Moore Petroleum Bulk Plant,5491 F Street,Banta,California
Page 10
Apex does recommend completing the installation of the vapor extraction system at the site. As
previously mentioned, vapor extraction in conjunction with air sparging was used successfully in
the southern portion of the site to cleanup soil and groundwater in the vicinity of the seven
10,000-gallon USTs and the bulk loading rack from 1995 to 1997. During that time, a total of
1,720 pounds of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) and 19.9 pounds of benzene
were recovered from soil and groundwater. Wells VEW-1 and MW-1 are currently built for
vapor extraction and still have piping running to the former remediation compound. Well MW-
8NEW-3 is located in the eastern portion of the site and has piping running to the former
{ remediation compound. In addition, well VEW-2 is also located in the eastern portion of the site
and is constructed as a vapor well. Well VEW-2 is located a few feet from the remediation
compound and needs underground piping. Lastly, well MW-7 is located in the southwest portion
of the site and, based on groundwater concentrations, would be an ideal location for a vapor
extraction well.
Apex recommends operating the vapor extraction system using already existing vapor wells
VEW-2 and VEW-3 to cleanup residual petroleum contamination remaining in soil in the eastern
portion of the site. In addition, the existing vapor extraction wells (VEW-1 and MW-1) could be
utilized to address the residual contamination present in the southern portion of the site. Apex
fells that reinstalling well MW-7 as a vapor well and connecting it to the system will further
t assist in cleaning up the southern portion of the site (soil under the building where residual
contamination remains).
Apex also recommends continuing the quarterly groundwater monitoring and reporting during
this interim remedial action. Also, continued monthly sampling at the domestic Rhodes well.
Moore is currently providing bottled water to the Rhodes family for drinking and cooking and
will continue to do so. Should the MTBE plume advance to the domestic Rhodes well, then
installing the two additional groundwater recovery wells (RW-1 and RW-3) and utilizing
groundwater extraction and treatment may become necessary. If groundwater concentrations do
not decrease, it may be necessary to utilize air sparging to remediate groundwater. The next
monitoring event is scheduled for July 2001.
Apex is preparing an interim remediation plan (IRP) report presenting the results of the March
2001 pumping test and outlining an IRP for the site.
1
1
