2.0 TECH.HICAL DISCUSSION?
o SeneP$1 Description
The mailing address for Del Monte plant Pdo. 33 is 2716 E. Miner Ave.
in Stockton, CA. Exceltech removed three (3), 10,000 gallon fuel
gasoline tanks at the Ciel Moate Stockton storage area located at the
corner of Myrtle St. and Filbert St. The tanks previously supplied
products to a gasoline station which N•vas latter purchased by Del
Monte and subsequently taken out of service. The tanks were buried
beneath a 40'X%35' concrete pad positioned irnrnediately adjacent to the
service station building.
After exposing the top Surfaces of the tanks, Exceltech discovered
that all three tanks were filled with water, necessitating its removal
prior to excavating the tanks. Analysis of the water in the tanks
revealed that the hydrocarbon levels were relatively low (less than 10
rng/kg) and lead was not detected. Based on these results, the City of 'I
Stock ori , Municipal Utilities Department permitted Del Monte toN
dispose of the liquids in the City sanitary se,ner. 1
Once the tanks ih••ere removed, the soil beneath the tanks was found w
1 to be contaminated with gasoline. Exceltech proceeded to aerate the
:oil by mechanically turning the soil until the relatively volatile
constituents had 'vaporized yielding material that could be directly /
backfilled into the excavation. 1
Finally, after compaction, the excavated area was resurfaced with
an asphalt cover.
I
o Subsurface Inspection and Soil Analysis
Although an obvious source for fuel leakage (i.e. pipe breaks or tank
holes) vas not present, gasoline contamination of the soil below they
tarda ;vas immediately evident from a strong vapor smell present
vihen the tanks were rernovel Subsequent laboratory analysis;
confirmed that soil contamination was particularity high beneath the
northern tank identified as Tank 7u (see Trace Analysis Laboratory
results dated 10/28/05). Fortunately, the contamination appeared to
be. lirnii_ed to a depth of approximately seven (7) feet as Summarized
Pare_ 3
.r'
v r
