16 June 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1042
Page 3 of 5
• Permitting and pre-field work activities;
• The advancement of seven probe borings to approximately 25 feet bsg.
• Soil sample collection and analysis;
• Report preparation
3.1. PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITY
Applicable site assessment permits will be submitted to the EHD and a health and safety plan will
be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous
Waste Site Activities (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S.
Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1985). Prior to mobilization, the area of
excavation will be clearly marked and a utility clearance obtained through Underground Service
Alert.
3.2. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
AGE proposes to advance seven probe borings using direct push technology in the areas of the
former AST and piping location, the in-ground scale pit, and the former boiler room location, to
assess for petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soil beneath the site. The borings will be advanced to
a depth of 25 feet below surface grade(bsg); the proposed probe boring locations may be modified
due to field observations. As the borings are advanced, soil samples will be collected at 5-foot
intervals beginning at 5 feet bsg and extending to the total depth of the probe boring. The proposed
probe boring locations are illustrated in Figure 2.Field procedures for advancement of probe borings
and collection of soil samples are presented in Sections 4.1 and 4.2.
Selected soil samples from the probe borings will be analyzed by a State of California Department
ofHealth Services(DHS)-certified laboratory.Selected soil samples from the AST and former boiler
room locations will be analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-all)in accordance with EPA Method 8015M and
• Volatile organic compounds,including benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and xylenes(BTEX),
and the fuel additives tertiarybutanol(TBA),di-isopropyl ether(DIPE),ethyl tert-butyl ether
(ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), methyl tertiary- butyl ether (MTBE),
1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB) in accordance with EPA
Method 8260B.
