i
concentrations at or above the laboratory reporting limit for the oxygenates MTBE, DIPE, ETBE,
and TAME in the groundwater sample collected from MW-DIS-15 this quarter.
TBA was detected in MW-DIS-11 s, 11 d, 12, 13, 14s, 14d, and 15 with concentrations ranging
from 8.7 µg/1 to 10.8 tgll. This marks the second consecutive time TBA has been detected in
MW-DIS-11s and the first time TBA has been reported in MW-DIS-11d, 12, 13, 14s, 14d, and 15
above the laboratory reporting limit.
Supplemental groundwater samples collected during the fourth quarter from MW-DIS-IIs and
MW-DIS-14s on October 7, 2003, were analyzed for 1,2-DCA, TBA, and MTBE. The results
showed only 1,2-DCA with concentrations of 44 }Lg/l and 1.9 in MW-DIS-11s and MW-DIS-14s
respectively. MTBE was detected in MW-DIS-14s with a concentration of 0.65 µg/1. TBA was
not reported in MW-DIS4Is or MW-DIS-14s during this event.
Because of the anomalous detections of TBA in the downgradient wells, the chromatograms for
the previous three quarters, this quarter, and the supplemental samples were reviewed. Upon
review, the chromatograms showed TBA concentrations in MW-11d, 13, 14s, 14d, and 15 with
concentrations ranging from 0.41 µg11 to 3.93 µg/1. These are below the reporting limit of 5 µg/1.
and were therefore, not reported by the laboratory. It appears, based on the results of the review
and the.known past detections of TBA within the footprint of the Disco facility in 1997 through
2000 (as reported by CH2M Hill), small concentrations of TBA have been present and migrating
from the source area. Additionally, with the recent start-up of the ozone/sparge system in 2003
and the lower laboratory reporting limits versus 1997-2000, TBA may have become mobilized
and detectable.
Kleinfelder recommends that a copy of this reportbe submitted to Mr. Mike Infiuna of the San
Joaquin County Public Health Services Department Environmental Health Division (EHD) and
Mr. Jim Barton of the Central Valley Office of the State of California Regional Water Quality
Control Board (CVRWQCB) by Del Monte Foods for their review and consideration.
This report is subject to the limitations found in Chapter 7 of this report.
1 .
I
l
t
12280-MON/5T03R1875
19 2004, Kleinfelder,Inc February 9,2004
KLEINFEEDER 2825 East Myrtle Street, Stockton,CA 95205-4794 (209)948-1345 (209)948-0621 fax
