KLEINFELDER
File No. 20-3941-0LEO 1
August 20, 1996
in the samples analyzed from Boring B-15. Trace levels of some fuel constituents were
present in the 2 and 25-foot samples from Boring B-13. A concentration of 220 mg/kg
TPH-Lubricating Oil was detected in the 2-foot sample from Boring B-14. The
concentrations of lubricating oil had attenuated to non-detectable levels by a depth of 5
feet. Although Kleinfelder would recommend no further investigation or clean-up as a
result of the chemical analysis conducted, the potential for contamination on this site still
exists. The City of Escalon must realize that Kleinfelder's scope of work was limited to
CALTRANS District 10's requirements, and that the only method of detecting if
contamination exists on site as a results of the station's activities will be observation and
sampling during site demolition and during the removal of the tanks and plumbing.
Removal of the underground storage tank system and dispensers will require permitting
through PHS/EHD. Additionally, a qualified hazardous materials contractor will be
necessary for the excavation, removal, transportation, etc.... Soil sampling by a firm such
as Kleinfelder will be required under the permit.
9. Borings B-16, B-17 and B-18 were advanced on the True Value Hardware site. All three
borings contained trace levels of TPH-Lubricating Oil or TPH-UEH. Boring B-18 had a
non-detectable sample beneath the sample that contained 1.1 mg/kg TPH-UEH.
Kleinfelder does not recommend any further investigation or clean-up as it relates to the
1 concentrations noted in the samples from these 3 borings.
i
10. Borings B-19 and B-20 were advanced on the Wright's Petroleum property. No
contaminants were noted in the samples analyzed.
r .
11. Boring B-20 was advanced on the Franco's Restaurant property. A concentration of 230
mg/kg TPH-Lubricating Oil was detected in the sample obtained from a depth of 5 feet.
That concentration attenuated to non-detectable levels by a depth of 10 feet. Boring B-20
was advanced on the Franco's Restaurant property. A concentration of 230 mg/kg TPH-
Lubricating Oil was detected in the sample obtained from a depth of 5 feet. That
concentration attenuated to non-detectable levels by a depth of 10 feet. The source of the
hydrocarbons is unknown. However, the source may be old fill material that contained
some oils. Kleinfelder would recommend no further investigation unless a source such as
a former tank was known to have existed on site.
i
12. Boring B-23 was advanced in the right-of-way in front of Pacoast Chemical. No
ere detected in any of the samples analyzed from this boring.
Q:7nd B-24 were 4dced on the former Matt's Texaco site. Field screening
ndicated thatftcant concentrations were detected in both borings.
readings wreIn the 15 foot to 30 foot zone in both borings especially
PI
obtained were screened in the field, and the PID readings
were recorded on the boring logs. PID readings ranged from 0.7 to 1,588 ppmv.
Hydrocarbon odors were present in almost all one-half of the soil samples obtained from
these 2 borings.
20-3941-01.EO1/MR960163 Page 18 of21 01996, Kleinfelder, Inc.
