I
KLEINFELDER
4.4. VADOSE ZONE SOIL SAMPLING
The vadose zone is the soil interval which lies above the saturated zone (groundwater). For the
purpose of evaluating the soils which would most likely be in contact with the root zone of a
planted agricultural crop and aid in the uptake of nutrient laden applied wastewater, only the
upper 6-feet will be assessed. Please refer to Plate 2 for the proposed soil boring locations.
Soil samples will be collected from three locations at depths of 6-inches bgs, 3-feet bgs, and 6-
feet bgs. One soil sampling location will be outside of the sprayFeld where no wastewater has
been applied in the past and will be used to assess background soil conditions. The remaining
two soil sampling locations will be from within the existing sprayfied where cropping occurs.
Soil samples will be collected by advancing a hand auger to the desired depths and driving a
stainless steel sampling shoe attached to a slide hammer. Each sample will be individually
labeled and placed in an iced cooler for preservation pending transportation to the analytical
laboratory using chain of custody control protocols.
50890.E01/ST05R358/JDZ:ly Page 6 of 12
0 2005,Kleinfelder,Inc.
