10/12!1998 16.09 9165350207 APEX ENVIROTECH
PAGE 17
Kir, E
More About. SRC
l+ n..y
TeCh"f
ORCM
NA
f" r,Y1 ap
t
u
ABOUT OXYGEN.'RELEASE COMPOUND, ORCW
Oxygen Release Compound, CIRC, is a patented formulation ofmagnesium peroxide, M'902, which
when moist releases oxygen slowly. The hydrated product is magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2.The
oxygen release rates is dependent upon the level of the contaminantflux. Generally, the product
aril! continue to release oxygen for about 6 months.
We have found; and the literature supports, that 'coxygen is the limiting factor in aerobic
bioremediation. The",microorganisms, nutrients and moisture are typically present but most sites
are oxygen defla't, with bioremediation proceeding anaerobically. The addition of oxygen
significantly Increases the remediation rate, typically by one.or two orders of magnitude.
ORC will not harm an aquifer. It is virtually Insoluble. 6iofoul ng is inhibited by an elevated, but
localized, pH. Iron fouling is avoided, particularly when compared to air sparging, by:.the long,
gentle release of dissolved oxygen which is dispersed widely. The hydrated product -is harrmles's
Mille of Magnesia which converts to a solid form. This ESRC residue may be used as a grout or filler
material In the saturated zone.
ORC is useful as a slow release source of oxygen in the remediation of any compound that is
aerobically degradable. ORC has been used In the successful remediation of dissolved phase>TPH
.. and BTEX compounds. ORC is most frequently used to address dissolved phase contamination plus
sorbed material in the saturated, capillary fringe and smear zones. ORC should not be usedwhenmore than a sheen offree product is evident.
ORC may be applied to mast several Objectives. The product may be used in an excavated tank pit
to eliminate one of the toughest and most persistent sources of contarrtinatton at, or near, the
solllgrouundwater, interface. ORC may be applied in the aquifer creating a highly oxygenated.zone
near the original source of the contamination. The resultant<increased microbial activity will
reduce the contaminant, mass, thereby collapsing the plume so that compliance at a point closer to
F
