I' I
F .
11 '
ff
REGIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Valley Showcase Company, which expanded over the past fifty (50) years encompassed
APN's 135-450-16 to 23, and was a display manufacturing business. Today the property is
vacated and the buildings are empty. The adjoining properties are a light industrial and
commercial complex, restaurant, and a residential neighborhood. Waterfront of the
Stockton Deep Water channel is approximately 600 feet south of the site. Approximately i
0.7 miles to the east is City Hall and Interstate 5 is located 0.4 miles to the west. Refer to
PLATE I, for more specific details.
GEOLOGIC AND GE MORPHI PROVINCE:
I
! The site is located near the southern end of the Sacramento Valley, a sub-province of what
is known as the Great Valley of California. The Sacramento Valley is composed of in
E3 excess of 25,000 feet of sediments derived from erosion, reworking, and uplift of the Sierra
Nevada Batholith to the east. The sediments range in age from Recent to Cretaceous and
possibly older, and consist of sands, gravels, silts, and clays produced by repeated reworking
of the outwash from the Sierras.
Relief in the vicinity of the site is relatively flat, 5'/mile or less, with drainage to the west -
k southwest towards the Sacramento/Stockton Delta area. The Stockton Deep Water
Channel is about 600 feet to the south, Weber Point at the east end of the Deep Water
I 4 Channel is approximately 1/2 mile west, and Mormon Slough is about 1600 feet south of
A" the site. PLATE Il, from USGS topographic sheet, shows the location of the site in
relation to other nearby features.
SOILS CLASSIFICATION: ,
According to the 1952 publication issued by the University of California, Berkeley, the soil
II in this area is known as the Stockton Adobe Clay. It is dark gray to brown alluvial soil
derived as outwash from basic igneous sources, (i.e. the Sierra Nevada Batholith). It is k
considered to have imperfect drainage, having hardpan subsoil layers generally underlain
with unconsolidated material. The Storie Index, .28, gives it a classification as poor.
PLATE III is a portion of a soils profile map from the above publication.
fi
DEPTH TO GROUNDWATER: 1
M Referring to the Spring 1993 water table map issued by the San Joaquin Flood Control
District, PLATE IVa, groundwater was recorded at approximately 40 feet below ground i
level at this site. The highest water levels measured in the last 10 years at this location
{ were about 23 to 26 feet below ground level in the Spring and Fall of 1983, according to
data published by the SJFCD. During the borings of the three (3) monitoring wells, the
water table was encountered at twenty (20) feet below ground level in each well, EXHIBIT
t ; , O. This difference between the actual water depth and the anticipated depth to water may
I+ indicate a perched water table due to the site being near the Stockton Deep Water channel
or possibly due to surface water run-off entering the open pit where the 500 UTS had been
and percolate downward through the underlying clay, silt, and sand or combination of the
cl ; 2 !
i;
