k" KLEINFELDER
File No. 20-2182-24
February 20, 1990
reinforcing steel . The purpose of these observations is to confirm
that the exposed soils are the same as those on which our
recommendations are based and to observe for any soft pockets of
soil or debris .
For the assumed building loads, the total settlement is not
expected to exceed 1/4- to 1/2-inch with the structures supported
on the existing soils . Differential settlement can be assumed to
be approximately one half these values . Most of the settlement is
expected to occur during the construction period shortly after the
loads are applied, provided the foundations are not exposed to
sustained standing water or flooding.
Lateral Pressures
Resistance to lateral forces can be provided either by friction
between the base of the foundations and the soil or by passive
pressure of the sides of the foundations against the soil . The
recommended passive soil pressure is an equivalent fluid pressure
of 350 pounds per square foot per foot of depth. The recommended
coefficient of friction is 0 . 4 .
Slab-On-Grade Floors
We recommend that in order to reduce the risk of heaving, the
clayey soils beneath slab-on-grade floors be moisture conditioned
to a depth of at least 18 inches to a moisture content between 3
to 5 percent over optimum. In addition, consideration should be
given to moisture conditioning the clayey soils beneath exterior
7
