kn KLEINFELDER
File No. 20-2182-24
February 20, 1990
outside building areas may be jetted. However, if jetting is
performed, sufficient time should be set aside to allow
consolidation to occur. In addition, density tests should be taken
to confirm the recommended compaction.
Generally if construction is performed during the winter or early
spring months, December through April, the surface and near surface
soils are usually adequately moisture conditioned due to rainfall .
However, if moisture conditioning is necessary, long-term
sprinkling, with dikes to control runoff, generally produces
uniform results . This method can take time, however, often on the
order of several days . We recommend that moisture conditioning be
performed immediately prior to placement of floor slabs . Moisture
tests should be taken to confirm that the increased moisture
content has been achieved.
It is important that the subgrade soils under exterior concrete be
moisture conditioned in the same manner as suggested for floor
slabs . Moisture conditioning should extend at least 2 feet beyond
such areas . It is also recommended that exterior concrete such as
walkways be placed in approximately square patterns not more than
approximately 200 square feet in size. Suitable divider strips
should be used at placement joints . Where concrete curbs are used
to isolate landscaping in or adjacent to the parking areas, we
recommend the curbs extend a minimum of 6 inches into the soils to
provide a moisture barrier.
11
