Pacific Gas and
& Electric Company
June 14, 2000
Mr. Bob McRae
California State Office of Emergency Services
2800 Meadowview Road
Sacramento, CA 95832
Dear Mr. McRae,
This letter is a follow up written report for the verbal spill notification discussed with you on Monday,
June 12, 2000 at 7:15 PM. At that time you assigned control number 00-2590 to this spill event.
Notifications were also made to Art Bentley at the San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services at
6:57 PM on 6/12/00, and to Kasey Foley at the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
at 7:00 PM on 6/12/00.
There was a release on 6/12/00 at approximately 5:00 PM located at Union Rd., `/< mile south of West
Ripon Rd., Ripon, San Joaquin County, California, 95337. While disc-ing a field, a farm tractor hit a
power pole with its discs, knocking over the pole. The tractor operator fled from the scene, but left the
tractor behind. The Manteca/Lathrop Fire Department responded to a grass fire that was started by the
fallen wires, noticed a leaking transformer attached to the downed pole, and notified PG&E of the spill.
The spill was not affected by the fire. Approximately 9 gallons of non -PCB mineral oil spilled directly
to the soil. No oil reached any waterways or the tractor. A PG&E crew removed the visibly
contaminated soil for offsite disposal.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss this matter in greater detail, please contact me at (209) 942-
1511.
Sin red
ohn Nesbitt
Distribution Supervisor
