5. EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCEDURES <br />We always try to do all work and transportation activities at a facility in a <br />safe and legal manner, but events may occur which could result in an accident <br />or emergency situation. For these emergencies, it is important that <br />appropriate actions be taken by the involved employees to minimize any possible <br />bad effects. <br />An emergency situation may include a spill or leak, fire, explosion, equipment <br />failure, vehicle accidents, a chemical reaction, natural disaster and employee <br />exposure, accident, injury or other mishap. <br />The emergency procedures presented in this section give, in order, the basic <br />steps to be followed for the "average" emergency situation. For some "average" <br />emergency situations and more severe emergencies, arrangements for acquiring <br />outside, additional assistance have been made by the Facility Emergency <br />Coordinator. (See Section 4E of this plan.) <br />Here is a brief summary of the basic response actions that should be taken in <br />an emergency situation: <br />1. In a fire event, immediately call the local Fire Department (or 911). <br />2. Take care of any injured; call paramedics or an ambulance for help. <br />3. Call the Facility Emergency Coordinator or Facility Supervisor. <br />Identify the cause of the emergency and IF IT CAN BE DONE SAFELY, take <br />actions to prevent the situation from worsening. <br />a. Use personal protective clothing and equipment. <br />b. Fight only small fires. <br />c. Remove sources of ignition. <br />d. Close valves, or containers. <br />e. Dike, divert, or absorb liquids. <br />f. Cover or suppress emissions (using soil, water, foam, plastic, <br />etc.). <br />g. Protect storm drains and sewers. <br />h. Turn off building ventilation systems. <br />i. As appropriate, protect the environment and property. <br />j. Mark areas to warn others, restrict access, and prevent accidental <br />contamination or track -out. <br />5-2 <br />
