The wastewater was not sampled , however, washwater is typically
10 percent the strength of the values for stillage in Table 2 for BOD
and nitrogen. For estimating purposes a washwater BOD of 1 ,000 mg/L
and a nitrogen content of 35 mg/I. were assumed.
SITE EVALUATION
The winery is located south of Woodbridge Road between Highway 99 and the
Southern :Pacific Railroad, north of Lodi , California. The climate,
topography, soils, and groundwater are described in this section.
Climate
The Lodi area is characterized by hot dry summers and cool winters.
Mean annual precipitation is about 16 inches and mean annual evapo-
transpiration is about 49 inches/year.
. Topography
The site is relatively flat with the percolation ponds being the low
point on the site. South of the site is the Mokelumne River. The
average surface elevation is 55 feet above sea level. The site is
shown on Figure 1 .
Soils
The soil type over the entire site is a Tokay fine sandy loam. The
recent Soil Conservation Service survey indicates that the Tokay soil
is very deep, well drained , and has a moderately rapid permeability
(2 to 6 inches/hour). These soil characteristics ale ideal for land
application of wastewaters.
The permeability of the soil was tested at several locations using
cylinder infiltrometers. The permeability in the stillage disposal
area ranged from 1.8 to 2.7 inches/hour. in field tests. The perme-
ability in the pond area (ponds had just dried and had not been
disced or ripped) was measured at 0.7 to 1 .6 inches/hour.
The percolation rate for the stillage site can be estimated using the
minimum rate measured 0.8 inches/hour.) and a conservative percentage
of 4 percent (range is 4 to 10 percent). The resultant percolation
rate is 12 inches/week. Since the recommended loading rate maximum
is 4 inches/week. for stillage, this loading rate should be used.
For the percolation pond area the lowest measured percolation rate
translates to a loading of 4.7 inches/week. Since the washwater is
generated for most of the year, the recommended loading rate is 3
inches/week. , to take into account cold and wet weather.
ENGEORGE S NOLTE AND ASSOCIATES 3
â– LAVH GNU(N'IINI INYI NIlNO..(NS ahV NS 110.1 (.5
