1. Mandatory internal spill reporting for all releases,
even if not reportable by federal or state law.
Environmental Services can help identify opportunities
which allow the recovered release to be reused or
recycled rather than disposed of as waste.
2 . Notification by terminals to Environmental Services
when new fuel additives or other chemicals come into
use. Review of Material Safety Data Sheets for these
materials can identify options for reuse or recycle for
obsolete chemicals or recovered spilled material.
MSDSs can be accessed through electronic on-line
service at both the terminals and T&D headquarters, and
are available for both BP and vendor products.
3 . Environmental Services reviews for environmental impact
new technologies or chemicals proposed for use by
Engineering Services or operations.
All these allow Environmental Services to anticipate any
opportunities for waste reduction or avoidance and communicate
them to Engilheering Services and/or operations.
Wastes which have been generated are tracked in the following
manner:
Each terminal maintains a file of manifests, analytical data,
etc. for documenting RCRA wastes. A duplicate of this
information is kept at T&D headquarters and maintained by
Environmental Services. An annual summary of waste generation
is done following submittal of RCRA Annual/Biennial Reports for
the previous year. The summary displays each waste stream, its
characteristics, and amounts, by terminal for the entire
terminal system, together with data for the previous two years.
It has been found that certain waste streams from the terminals
are hazardous only for a limited set of RCRA characteristics.
Listed wastes are never generated. Wastnn Are npna, aea
a given Terminal .. Graf_
u+t_
w.
a RCnn wgbte only once every several years.
and infrequently and
is unconnected to any continuous production process, an annual
system-wide summary of generation has been found to be the mem+
useful way or tracking data.
A auuuuaiy uZ wastes generates at T&D facilities follows:
L WANUAMENWRONQUNVIRON.DOC/9.1693/75
F
