PHS/EHD has the
following comments for your consideration.
Four soil borings, B101- B104, were drilled and sampled in February 1993. Soil
contamination was detected in samples collected from each boring. The soil borings were
all located approximately 35 feet from the former tank location. The analytical results
suggest that the horizontal boundaries of contamination are defined.
Groundwater samples were collected from MW4 during October 1992 and February 1993
and have not detected petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants. Monitoring wells, MWl -
` MW3, are reportedly dry. The groundwater gradient direction is estimated to be to the
north-east, based on monitoring data available when MWl - MW3 contained groundwater.
PHS/EHD concurs with the recommendation to continue quarterly monitoring prior to the
installation of additional monitoring wells. However, additional monitoring wells will be
necessary to determine the direction of groundwater flow beneath the site.
The report indicated that two remedial options are being considered. The first option
considered is to auger drill to 70 feet with a maximum auger diameter of 6 feet. The
columns would then be backfilled with grout. The contaminated soil would then be either
treated on site or disposed off site. The second option being considered is to excavate to 30
feet and biovent to remediate the deeper contamination. Soil contamination is evidenced
up to 70 feet.
A nMsbn of San Joaquin Cowry He"Care Services
