Carle, R. S.
San Joaquin Local Health District =t
x 1601 East Hazelton Avenue
PO Sox 2009
FStockton, CA 95201
Dear Mr. Carle,
i
The following ;cork plan relates to the subsurface investigation
of diesel residues at the Ragu Foods, Inc. , facility located at
1400 waterloo Road, Stockton, CA. The plan addresses the instal-
lation and sampling of three shallow groundwater wells. Three
sites have been selected for the installation of monitoring `{a
wells, as shown on the attached drawing. The orientation of the
R'' • wells at 120 degrees apart is ideally suited to the determination ;
,µ of the direction of groundwater , flow. The: wells will be locat ,`'
° _ about 60 feet from the tank site in areas that should provide ;
3>; some security from heavy truck traffic. The wells should be''
screened from 10 feet above the water table to 20 feet below the ,.
top of the water table. The 20 foot depth of well screen below
the water table may be reduced if an underlying clay of greater
than 5 feet thick is encountered; as there is no desire to "..
t> penetrate through confining layers, thus creating the potential '
for the inadvertent contamination of underlying aquifers.
During the drilling of the monitor wells, soil samples will
collected from each location at the surface and at 5 ' interval'
thereafter down to groundwater. Those samples appearing visua11"'
stained, odorous or otherwise contaminated, or producing
response on a field screening instrument (a HNu photofonizer) ; ..
' will be submitted for chemical analysis. If no samples appear ,,
= Y contaminated, then the two samples closest to groundwater will b04-' .
submitted; no more than 9 soil samples per monitor well location >` -
will be submitted for chemical analysis. Chemical analysis of
soils will include benzene, toluene, xylene and ethylberienee'
using EPA Method 8020, and total petroleum hydrocarbon by Methot,
8015.
Once the wells are installed and developed, water samples will, b`
S 4= . collected and analyzed for benzene, xylene, toulene a
ethylbenzene per EPA Method 632 , and total petroleum hydrocarbo
