IMT-01-97 17:00 from:l.T. CORPORATION 5182282501 T-820 P.02 Job-665
%Nor %"64
Mass Ralauce Calculation
(working Copy)
1.0 Introduction
A mass balance calculation was performed to estimate the volume of total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel in sail treated versus the volume of TPH as dienet in soil
remaining at the Lipton (formerly Van don Bergh Foods Company) facility. In May 1986,
three underground storage tames (USTs) were removed from a common excavation.
Subsequent invcstigations resulted in the determination that TPH as diesel was the
contaminant of concern at the site. In May 1995, interim corrective action activities resulted
in the excavation and disposal of approximatcly 330 cubic yards of TPH as diesel impacted
soil from the source area.
To perform the mass balance calculation tt following assumptions were made.
■ The voluTne of soil treated assumes that the gift source removal took place
during the interim corrective action. There was no consideration of natural
degradation of diesel that would have occurred since May 1986, when the
U$Ts were initially removed,
■ Based on the geology at the site, the soil density was assumed to be 1.5 Elcins
or 93.642 lb&. This density corresponds to a silty soil.
• The diesel density was assumed to be 0.9 g/cm3.
+ Nem.-detect values repartee/ for TPH as diesel were assumed to have a value of
0.5 mg/kg, corresponding to one-half of the typical detection limit of TPH as
diesel in soil (1 mg/kg)-
2.0
g/kg).2A Method of Calculation
rRe treated mass of diesel in soil was initially calculated. Secondly, the mzidual mass of
diesel in soil was calculated. Based on the results, the percentage of diesel mass tmated was
calculated.
2.I Treated At= of Diesel In Soil
The mass of diesel treated was calculated by multiplying the volume of soil excavated by the
average TPH as diesel concentration measured in the excavated soil.. Approximately 330
cubic yards (8,910 le) of diesel impacted soil was excavated and dispuscd of during the
intim corrective action implemented in May 1985. The average TPH as diesel
concentration in the excavated soil was 2,975 mg/kg, This corresponded to a treated mass of
2,482 lbs of TPH as diesel. Table 1 provides the detailed calculations performed.
M7JoS-0i-47N13dP19?-d4Qd jll 1
