6" <br /> 1.0 Introduction <br /> IT Corporation was contracted to conduct a site bioassessment on samples collected from the <br /> Van Den Bergh Foods site. The Biotechnology Applications Center received three(3) soil <br /> samples on August 22,1995. The samples were collected August 21,1995. <br /> Bioremediation is an environmental remediation tool that uses bacteria to oxidize a wide variety <br /> of wastes. Bacteria can transform most natural and man-made organic compounds given <br /> appropriate environmental conditions and an adequate acclimation period. The biological <br /> conversion of organic compounds into biomass, carbon dioxide, and water, makes bioremediation <br /> an attractive remedial alternative. <br /> '+ The Van Den Bergh Foods Company site has total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contamination <br /> from underground storage tanks. The predominant contaminant at the site is TPH as diesel fuel. <br /> The underground storage tanks were removed in May, 1986 and the tank excavation was <br /> subsequently backfilled. In order investigate the feasibility of bioremediation at the Van Den <br /> Bergh Foods Company site, a bioassessment was performed on three site soil samples. <br /> One approach for in situ bioremediation which may be used for vadose zone impacted soils found <br /> on site is known as bioventing. Bioventing is the in situ biological treatment of contaminated <br /> vadose zone soil. During bioventing, remediation is promoted by supplying oxygen to the <br /> subsurface using blowers or vacuum pumps. Bioventing can effectively treat any biodegradable <br /> compound, if bacteria are present in the soil with the metabolic capability to biodegrade the target <br /> compounds. In the case of petroleum products such as gasoline,jet fuel, diesel, and heating oils, <br /> bacteria are nearly always present but they may not be very active due to lack of oxygen, extreme <br /> w., pH, lack of nutrients, lack of moisture, or cold temperature. <br /> 2.0 Bioassessment Test Results <br /> This bioassessment is a series of tests designed to evaluate the physical, chemical, and <br /> microbiological characteristics of a site. The bioassessment consists of residual nutrient <br /> determinations, pH, microbial population density, and the ability of the microbial populations to <br /> grow under enhanced conditions.
