In a cancer study sponsored by the National Toxicologg Program (NTP) . technical grade xglene gave no evidence-af carcinogenicity in rats or mice dosed daily for two gears . This product can contain methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE) . Most mutagenicity data on MTBE, except for the in vitro mouse lymphoma test. indicate that it is not mutagenic . MTBE caused birth defects in mice exposed to 8.000 ppm throughout pregnancy. No birth defects were observed In mice at 1,0010 ppm or in rats or rabbits at ang dose of MTBE_ These results suggest that the risk of birth defects in humans from MTBE is negligible at the anticipated exposure concentrations. Whole gasoline exhaust was reviewed bg the International Agency for Research on Cancer ( IARC) in their Monograph Volume 46 (1989) _ Evidence for causing cancer was considered inadequate in animals and inadequate in humans.
