Page 3
Site Conceptual Model
Project No. 989.2
December 17,2003
' 2.0 SOURCES OF CONTAMINATION
' 2.1 Historical Sources of Petroleum Hydrocarbons
Two (2) 1,000-gallon USTs were installed at the VWDC site in June of 1974. The tanks
' were used to fuel both company and personal vehicles for business purposes. On June 8,
1994, two USTs along with a fuel dispenser and associated piping were removed from the
site. The location of the former tank pit is shown-in Figure 2. Contamination was detected
' during the tank pull and was the source of petroleum hydrocarbons found at the site. BTEX,
TPH-G and lead were detected in the original sampling event. The tank removal and relative
laboratory results are discussed in William J. Hunter& Associates—Interim Report Covering
Results of Soil Contamination Investigation dated January 3, 1995.
2.2 Current Sources of Petroleum Hydrocarbons
The Valley Wholesale Drug Company no longer provides fuel to company vehicles. There
' are no USTs and no potential sources for petroleum hydrocarbon releases remaining at the
site.
3.0 NATURE & EXTENT OF CONTAMINATION
' A summary of soil analytical data is included as Table 1 and a summary of groundwater
analytical data is included as Table 2 of Appendix A.
' Figure 2 is a site map showing the locations of the former UST pit, structures, soil borings,
GeoProbe boreholes and groundwater monitoring wells. Figure 3 is a rose diagram
indicating historical groundwater gradients and bearings.
' The excavation of the USTs and the collection of soil samples during the tank removal phase
of work are discussed in William J. Hunter & Associates — Interim Report Covering Results
' of Soil Contamination Investigation dated January 3, 1995. Plate IV of the report shows the
location of the excavation and soil sample points (Hunter et al.). Plate VII of the report
' shows plan and section views of the final excavation and soil sample locations (Hunter et al.).
3.1 Nature of Contamination
' Contamination is attributed to a leak associated with the USTs in place at VWDC between
June 1974 and June 1994. Soil and groundwater samples have been collected and analyzed
' during various stages of work performed at the site since the removal of two (2) 1,000-gallon
USTs on June 1, 1994. Testing has been done to determine the presence of BTEX, TPH-G
and fuel oxygenates including; MtBE, ETBE, TAME, DIPS, TBA, 1,2-DCA and EDB from
