f
detected) , 4 showed levels of TPHG up to 19 mg/kg and 3 indicated
higher levels of contamination( see figure 4 of report) . Samples
taken from Northern part of the pit where the highest levels of
contamination were indicated from the first soil samples , showed ND
or none detected, indicating most of the heavy contamination had
been removed.
Of the three samples that showed higher levels of contamination,
two were from the South West side wall in close proximity to each
other. One a 1 1 ' 6" showed 27 , 000 mg/kg the other at 21 ' 1 0" shows
6, 000 mg/kg indicating that the contamination was decreasing at s
deeper levels. This one contaminated area might have been removed,
but was right on the property line and further excavation was not
possible. The last highly contaminated area was in the lower North
center of the excavation at 16 ' and was in the approximate area of
where the monitoring well was drilled. Soil samples from the
monitoring well indicated ND for TPH as diesel and gasoline and
other chemicals tested for except . 10 ppm benzene was indicated at
the 41 foot level.
In conclusion please consider the following comments :
1 . The source of the contamination (the tanks ) has been
removed.
2. Most of the contaminated soil has been removed from the
ground except for the two isolated areas ; one on the side
wall and one in the North center of the hole.
3. The highly contaminated area in the North part of the hole
under the oldest tanks cleaned up at 14 ' to 161 , indicating
that migration of petroleum hydrocarbons was very slow over
the many years the tanks were in operation.
4. Soil samples from the monitoring well ( drilled in close
proximity to the remaining contaminated area in the North
center of the excavation) basically showed no migration of
petroleum hydrocalons below the 1711evel .
We would hope that the site can be given an environmental clearance
as soon as the excavated soil is removed from the site (which we
will be doing in the near future) . If further remediations of the
site may be required , please let us know as soon as possible,
since the property is under a contract of sale pending an
environmental clearance from the San Joaquin County Environmental
Health Division.
Very Truly Yours ,
Pete Ruhkala
Secretary-Treasurer
