MMME,
Mil
ig
S,cw u - - R' all
-
X1i
r M
Ri
W!
Appendix rA
EXPLORATORY BORING AND
- WELL INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
The procedures which were used for drilling exploratory borings, collecting
samples, and installing monitoring wells are described in this appendix.
The following procedures were supervised by a California state-registered
geologist.
- Exploratory Soil Borings
The exploratory soil borings for the seasonal ground-water monitoring
_. wells ware drilled using 8-inch-diameter, continuous-flight, hollow-stem
auger drilling equipment. Soil samples for logging were obtained from
auger-return materials and by advancing a modified California split-spoon
' sampler equipped with stainless steel liners into undisturbed soil beyond
the tip of the auger. Solis were logged by an EMCON geologist consistent
with the Unified Soil Classification System and standard geological tech-
niques. The deep well was drilled using air-rotary drilling equipment. A
modified California split-spoon sampler was used for sampling the first 15
feet of the soil boring, and the remainder of the boring was logged using
drill cuttings.
The soil samplers were cleaned with a detergent water solution, rinsed
with clean water, and equipped with clean liners between sampling inter-
vals. Augers and samplers wer£ steam cleaned between each boring to
reduce the possibility of cross contamination.
N
Drill cuttings generated during the drilling procedure were stockpiled an
site. Stockpiled drill cuttings were placed an and covered with plastic
sheeting. The stockpiled soil is typically characterized by collecting and
analyzing composite samples from the stockpile. EMCON will recommend
— pig'+9051g050101d A- 1 Rev.0 July 2,1931
