As the air/ozone bubbles come into
contact with groundwater contaminated with VOCs, the VOCs become entrained in the bubbles and
are oxidized upon contact with ozone. Ozone is a strong oxidant and the end products of the
oxidation reaction with petroleum hydrocarbon constituents include chloride, water, and carbon
dioxide .
In order to determine the effectiveness of ozone sparging, an ozone sparging pilot test would need to
be conducted at the site. Data collected during the ozone sparging pilot test would be utilized to
evaluate the feasibility of this technology to remediate groundwater, as well as provide information
to properly design a full-scale ozone sparging remediation system . In order to conduct the ozone
sparging pilot test at least three ozone sparging wells would need to be installed. Each ozone
sparging well would have three nested ozone sparging points which would be screened within
specific lithologic intervals approximately 50 to 55, 70 to 75 , and 100 to 105 feet bgs.
4.0 GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION ALTERNATIVES EVALUATION
The soil and groundwater alternatives presented above were evaluated according to the following
criteria:
1 . Level of protection of human health and the environment;
2. Reduction of toxicity, mobility and volume of contaminants;
3 . Compliance with regulatory guidelines;
4. Cost effectiveness/public benefit;
5 . Short and long term effectiveness;
6. Implementation, regulatory and community acceptance.
4.1 Groundwater Extraction
♦ Criterion 1 :
This alternative appears to have low health-based risks. Petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted
groundwater would also be extracted from the subsurface. The petroleum hydrocarbons
dissolved in groundwater would be removed from the groundwater prior to discharge to the
local sanitary or storm sewer system. Additionally, groundwater would be monitored
periodically to ensure that remediation is progressing appropriately, and regular operation and
maintenance activities would be conducted on the remediation system to insure appropriate
operation.
♦ Criterion 2:
The groundwater extraction remediation would most likely reduce the level of toxicity,
mobility and volume of contaminants to levels acceptable to the regulatory agency. The
groundwater extraction system would also reduce, to the extent possible, the migration of
contaminants off-site, and may also remediate contaminated groundwater off-site. An aquifer
pump test would have to be conducted to determine if this is a feasible alternative for
remediation of the site.
s:\environmental\28349keports\feasibility.doc 5
