The equipment is significantly smaller in size as
compared with a groundwater remediation system. Additional costs would be incurred for
permitting, purchase, renting or leasing the remediation equipment, remediation system
installation, and operation and maintenance of the system. The cost of this alternative is
estimated to be $450,000 to $750,000.
♦ Criterion 5:
This alternative should in the short term, within the initial 12 months of operation, effectively
reduce the concentrations of contaminants on-site. Also over the long term, 36 to 60 months,
ozone sparging has the capability to reduce the petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants
dissolved in groundwater to regulatory levels.
♦ Criterion 6:
This alternative can be reasonable implemented given the current site use and conditions. Also,
regulatory acceptance of this alternative is generally positive, given similar site conditions.
During construction of the remediation system there would be disruption to on-site activities.
The equipment compound aesthetics and operation and maintenance activities are minimal and
are not likely adverse to the community.
5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the soil and groundwater data collected to date, ATC recommends proceeding with
remedial activities at this site by conducting vapor extraction and ozone sparging pilot tests. SVE
and ozone air sparging appear to be the best alternatives to effectively remediate petroleum
hydrocarbon-impacted soil and groundwater. Upon regulatory concurrence of the recommended
pilot testing activities, ATC will begin making arrangements for conducting the pilot tests to
evaluate the effectiveness of SVE and ozone sparging as remedial technologies for this site.
s:\environmental\28349\reports\feasibility.doc 7
