Biotreatability
Biotreatability investigations typically are performed following they:determination of project
feasibility and are designed to characterize the microbiological and physicochemical criteria
required during implementation to ensure optimal process performance and cleanup kinetics.
The evaluations typically are performed using bench and/or field-scale model systems and are
r designed to simulate biotreatment under site-specific conditions.
. Biotreatability analyses can be provided through BioLogic in a timely and economic manner.
r- Reports generated from these investigations include data':interpretation and practical recom-
mendations designed to ensure the success of the remediation and/or waste minimization
project. Several of the evaluations typically performed in a biotreatability investigation may
include:
Biotreatability Investigation parameters
0 Basic nutrient physicochemistry H Bioaugmentation/biostimulation
0 Selective degrader identification a Precipitant evaluations ()vater)
0 Microbial enumeration and 0 Effects of physicochemical
composition parameters
P l
0 Synergistic/antagonistic Q Effects of surfactants
microbial interactions Q Effects of nutrient additives
Microbial biodegrader screen Q Microbial kinetics assessment
assessment
r'
s :.
Biofouling Assessment -qp
Biofouling is a condition associated with tight soils where ,interparticle plugging results from
subsurface bacterial growth and biomass formation. Biofouling can develop quickly and just
as quickly "foul", sometimes irreversibly, an in situ project. A propensity toward biofouling
can be addressed in a biotreatability investigation where in situ model systems containing
` site-specific soill are constructed to determine whether bi4ouling will occur and/or to what
point bioremediation will be effective, if at all. The data generated in a biofouling assessment
will aid the client in making feasibility decisions as to the 'appropriateness of bioremediation
for the project site.
7
/
