INTRODUCTION
This is a report of an evaluation of Bio Converter's Inc.'s bioremediation
process, which uses their proprietary bacterial consortium (known as JFT-1 TM)
and nutrient biosolution. The evaluation was funded by the Center for the
Evaluation of New Environmental Technologies (CENET), a partnership between
the Department of Environmental Health and Safety of the University of California
at Davis and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Topics
presented in this report include: (1) introduction and executive summary (2)
overview of bioremediation, (3) materials.and equipment used in the evaluation,
(4) procedures and analyses used in the evaluation, (5) results and discussion,
and (6) surnrnary and recommendations.
SCOPE
This study was undertaken to evaluate the BCI process as applied to the
remediation of TCE, DDT, and Diesel contaminated soils and waters.
OBJECTIVES
-- The overall objective of the proposed research was to evaluate the
efficacy of the JFT-1 TM biosolution in remediating contaminated soils and waters.
Additionally, the claims that the JFT-1 TM bacteria could perform aerobically in an
anaerobic environment without the added oxygen that other aerobic
bioremediation bacteria require, was to be tested. Delineation of any additional
oxygen or energy source was to be determined, if possible, and microbial activity
was to be monitored.
To achieve these goals, the following specific objectives were pursued:
1. To review the literature and to identify standard testing procedures used by
EPA to monitor contaminated site remediation, standard methods of
bioremediation, and known or suggested chemical pathways for microbial
metabolism degradation of chemical wastes.
2. To design and construct sealed soil reactors, creating anaerobic
environments suitable for contaminated soil remediation testing of JFT-1TM.
3. To design and construct sealed water reactors suitable for contaminated
water remediation testing of JFT-1TM and allowing dissolved oxygen testing.
