Oemn .
%rctievron.
. - y
this location near the source-area.
A recent review of.Chevron internal records-has:revealed the occurrence of two separate:product
line test failures (12184 and 5185). No'information-was available which would identify-the location
of the line failures or the amounts {if`any) ofproduct released. Records indicated that the lines
(regular and unleaded).were both replaced in'June,-1985.There,was'also-mention in the records
that the product lines were removed in Ja'n'uary,, 1987 -during tank removal activities .and
subsequently salvaged by the. same construction company who perforriied the tank removal
operations.
Based on the above information and,on the-SJCPHS'suspicion,that the product lines may still be in
place, proposed soil boring SB-3 has been located to confirm the removal:of-the former product
lines and to determine the extent of any hydrocarbon contamination to the soil or groundwater that
may have occurred as a result of any product-line release.
In addressing the.request for a mass balance evaluation to estimate the original source volume, it is
.felt that any volume estimate performed.with-the'data:available would be grossly inaccurate. Data.
of this type may be useful in evaluating the efficiency of remediation activity however, Chevron'
does not feel that soil or groundwater'remediation is necessary at this site.
Hopefully;this information addresses all, concerns raised by_SJCPHS in their letter dated,January
11; 1993. The..work proposed-in this work plan will be's6e'duled.as soon as your response is
received.
If you have any questions or comments;I can be reachedat(5 10) 842-8695.
Sincerely,
Brett L.
