3.3 Soil Excavation and Disposal
In this alternative, soil would be excavated and disposed of at an off-site disposal facility
A Class II facility was assumed for the purpose of cost estimation because of the presence
of TPH above 1,000 mg/kg The tasks associated with this option are as follows
• Excavating and disposing of the existing cover material
' • Excavating a 20- by 20-foot pit down to 11 feet, and stockpiling the existing clean
backfill
' • Overexcavating the sidewalls at a 1-to-1 slope from the surface to the excavation
floor to prevent cave-in
' • Testing the soil to identify the limits of contamination
• Transporting and disposing of impacted soil
' 0 Backfilling and compacting the excavation
• Repaving the excavated area
The cost associated with these tasks is estimated to be about $32,000, assuming the
impacted soil can be disposed of at a Class II facility However, this is not a feasible
option Nestle no longer owns the property and the present owner has a significant
amount of truck traffic in the area of the impacted soil (the loading dock) An excavation
' in this area would shut down the trucking operations for at least a two week period In
addition, there are structural concerns with the building at the site since it is located next
to the area that would potentially be excavated
3.4 Soil Excavation and Incineration
In this alternative, soil would be excavated and transported to a licensed incinerator site to
be incinerated The tasks associated with this option are as follows
' • Excavating and disposing of the existing cover material
' + Excavating a 20- by 20-foot pit down to 11 feet, and stockpiling the existing clean
backfill
' • Overexcavating the sidewalls at a 1-to-1 slope from the surface to the excavation
floor to prevent cave-in
t
11P721RXK00285 DOC-951 lc I Rev 0 8128195
22074-001 001 3-2.
1
