However, if no apparent contamination is observed, the soil borings will not be
completed as ground water wells and only backfilled. The remaining borings and well completions
will be based on a review of the soil conditions, analytical data of soil/ground water and data from
the domestic well on site.
Soil samples will be collected ahead of the soil borings with a five-foot,three-inch wide core barrel.
Soil sample from the driven recovery will be collected at five-foot intervals using six-inch brass
sleeves.Soil samples for laboratory analysis will selected based on visual observations of petroleum
hydrocarbon impact, organic vapor meter (OVM) readings, changes in lithology, and/or at the
capillary fringe. The selected soil samples will be analyzed by a State of California DHS-certified
laboratory for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, mineral spirits and
motor oil (TPH-all)in accordance with EPA Methods 3550/8015 Modified;
• Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylene (BTEX) and di-isopropyl ether (DIPE),
ethyl tertiary-butyl ether(ETBE),methyl tertiary-butyl ether(MTBE),tertiary-amyl methyl
ether (TAME), tertiary butanol (TBA), methanol, ethanol, ethylene dibromide (EDB) and
• 1,2-dichloroethane(1,2-DCA) in accordance with EPA Method 8260 and
• Total lead in accordance with EPA Method 6010B. .
Laboratory reports of soil analyses, testing methods, laboratory quality assurance/quality control
(QA/QC) reports, and sample chain of custody documentation will be presented in a report
3.3. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
The soil boring will be advanced to the top of the ground water table, as identified by collection of
a saturated soil sample, to collect a grab ground water sample. Once ground water has been
encountered, a hydropunch-equivalent water sampling device will be driven two to three feet into
the water-bearing zone.Ground water samples will be collected with a hydropunch-equivalent water
sampling assembly fitted with one-inch diameter 0.010-inch slotted temporary well screen. Each
ground water sample will be extracted by lowering a bailer through the hollow center of the drive
rods and into the screen section.Depending on subsurface and drilling conditions, grab groundwater
samples may also be collected directly through the hollow stem augers using a new disposable bailer.
Ground water samples will be collected into laboratory supplied containers. Ground water samples
for BTEX, TPH-g, fuel oxygenating compound, and lead scavenger compound analyses will be
collected into laboratory-supplied, 40-m1 volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials containing 0.5-m1
•
of hydrochloric acid as preservative,one-liter amber containers and 500-milliliter plastic containers.
Following collection the samples will be appropriately labeled, placed on ice and kept in a cooler
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
