EHD concurs with Wright's
recommendation that Kiff Analytical LLC (Kiff) review the sample chromatographic
patterns for Method 8015B to see if the sample patterns match fuel chromatographic
patterns other than the gasoline and diesel standards. Also, please have Kiff review the
sample chromatograms from the analysis by Method 8260B for possible correlations with
the discrete peaks found during the sample analysis by Method 8015B and submit the
results of these evaluations to EHD by May 31, 2005.
Wright reviewed the 1996 regional depth to groundwater maps prepared by San Joaquin
County Flood Control and Water Conservation District (FC&WCD) and inferred a
westward groundwater flow direction. However, depth-to-water maps are not a reliable
indicator of groundwater flow direction. EHD reviewed the map titled Lines of Equal
Elevation of Groundwater Spring 1999 also prepared by FC&WCD, and the groundwater
flow direction documented in a report dated March 21, 2001, for Delicato Vineyard
located at 12001 South Highway 99. Both sources indicate that the groundwater flow
direction is toward the north- northeast. Although it is not possible to determine the
specific groundwater flow direction at the Ace Tomato Company site without on-site
monitoring wells, this discrepancy in groundwater flow direction is noteworthy
considering the recent site investigation did not include the advancement of soil borings
northeast of the underground storage tank location. At this time, EHD will not direct
additional assessment to resolve this issue, but will await the report on the total petroleum
hydrocarbon as gasoline (TPH-gasoline) and TPH-diesel reevaluations.
