Ogden Environmental Services, Inc. March 4, 1980
Mr. William s. Rickman Page :3
In addition to the deeper borings within the processing plant, a number
of shallower borings will be completed with a JMC stainless steel hand auger.
Prior to advancing these borings, the concrete foundation will be saw cut and
removed. Undisturbed soil samples will be collected with a stainless steel
drive sampler. The hand auger method should provide representative soil
samples above the water saturated sand layers. 'these layers were encountered
at depths of about 15 to 25 feet in previous borings at the site (see Klein-
felder report, April 1987) . Caving within the borehole may prevent advancino
the hand auger to depths exceeding 25 feet below ground surface.
Should additional sampling be required to determine the vertical extent
of contamination within the boiler house and processing plant, a skid-mounted
drilling rig designed for use in areas with limited access could be posi-
tioned within the respective buildings.
Laboratory Analysis. Soil samples collected for chemical analysis will
be recovered in stainless steel or brass liners. These samples will be
capped, labeled, and stored at about 4°C. All samples will be field screened
for volatile organics using a photoionization detector (PID) . Those samples
that show positive readings of organic gases will be analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons (TPN) . These samples will be transported under
chain-of-custody control, to a state-Certified chemical laboratory. The
samples will be analyzed for TPH by EPA method 8015 (modified) . Other
samples within the potentially contaminated zone will be retained (stored at
4°C) in the event that additional testing is required.
Report and Recommendations
The information collected will be presented in a narrative and graphic
format to identify the extent of the petroleum contamination. If practical,
the contamination plume will be mapped laterally and vertically, such that
the higher concentrations of petroleum contaminants can be identified for
remediation purposes. The report will provide options and alternatives for
practical remediation purposes.
