General Information
Site Address and Contact Person
Vince Westphal, General Manager, Bear Creek Winery, 11900 Furry Road, Lodi, CA
95240; Telephone(209) 368-3113; Fax(209) 368-3083.
Local F,rilbreement Agency
Monitoring well permits will be obtained from the San Joaquin County Environmental
Health Department.
Locations and Rationale
Monitoring wells are being installed at this site to determine to what extent, if any,
wastewater from the winery impacts groundwater. The wastewater is routed to a 10-acre
infiltration area adjacent to the winery. The waste line leads to a sump on the east edge
of the infiltration area. The contents of the sump are then pumped into a ditch network
that can be adjusted to lead the wastewater to any portion of the infiltration area. The
positions of these features are shown on the site map,Figure 1.
The presumed direction of groundwater flow is toward the southeast, parallel to the
direction of surface drainage. It is proposed to place three monitoring wells at the site;
tentative locations are shown on Figure 1. This placement of wells will allow accurate
computation of the groundwater gradient by the three-point method. Assuming the
gradient direction is as expected, there will be one up-gradient well and two down-
gradient wells for the primary infiltration area.
Survey detads
The site is situated in the northwest quarter section of Section 29 in T3N,R7E. It is level
at an elevation of about 20 feet(MSI-).
I'quipment decontamination
The monitoring wells will be drilled with 10-inch hollow-flight augers. TIYe augers will
be brought to the site in a steam-cleaned condition. The augers will be stearn-cleaned
after drilling each well in preparation for drilling the next well.
