The samples were then immediately
labelled with a unique sample number, date and time sampled, and placed in a chilled ice
cooler for transport to a State•certified laboratory for analysis. A copy of the chain-of-
custody form that accompanied the samples is attached to this letter, For those instances
where sampling deviated from the procedures described above, sampling procedures that
were employed are noted below.
REM WAL OF UNDERGROUND TANKS
The 10,000 gallon diesel tank (Tank #0 was excavated on 25 and 26 October 1990. A
three-foot diameter corrugated iron pipe was in place around the fill wipe of the tank. This
pipe extended from the ground surface down to the top of the tank, a distance of
-. approximately five feet. The soil within this corrugated pipe surrounding the fill pipe was
observed to be stained. Staining was also observed in the soil on the north sidewall of the
tank excavation, beneath the location of the fill pipe. No other staining was noted in the
soil surrounding the tank.
The 6,600 gallon diesel tank(Tank#2)was excavated on 26 and 27 October 1990. Staining
was noted in the soil immediate] above the north end of the tank (in the area containing .
the vent line, the measurement port and the product lines) and in the soil surrounding the
fill pipe above the south end of the tank. Staining was also noted in the sail on the eastern
and western sidewalls of the tank excavation.
Both tanks were resting on concrete cradles and were secured to the cradles with metal
tie-down straps. These straps were cut prior to removal of the tanks from the excavations.
Both the 10,000 gallon and the 6,600 gallon diesel tanks were removed on 29 C:tober 1990.
After the tanks were inerted they were removed from the excavations with a crane and
placed on a flatbed truck and Inspected for holes. No holes were evident in either tank.
The tanks and associated piping were transported by lack Parker Trucking of San Pablo to
the Erickson, Inc. facility in Richmond, where they were disposed of as scrap metal.
During
1 November to 6 November 1990 both of the excavations were backfilled with
imported pea gravel and the soil removed from each respective excavation.
} EXCAL'ATION SAMPLING
Charles Hun
t of the Sa,, Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health
Division, was on site during the collection of the soli samples submitted for analyses.
es were collected from
Samples were collected on 29 and 31 October I990.
