El Pinal Drive 500
Stockton, California 95205
Subject: Work Plan for Installation of Monitoring Well
Franklin High School
Stockton Unified School District
HLI 00817
A-,
Dear Mr. Leubner:
This work plan describes a proposed groundwater investigation at the former site of an
underground storage tank located at Franklin High School. It is submitted in response to the 10
December 1997 letter from Mr. Steve Sasson of the Public Health Services, San Joaquin County t
Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) stating that in order to determine the vertical extent
of contamination in the area of B-1, a water sample should be collected and analyzed for gasoline
range hydrocarbons and its constituent components of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and
xylenes.
The groundwater investigation is intended to evaluate whether or not petroleum hydrocarbons
have migrated through soil and into groundwater. In order to accomplish this task, we
recommend the installation of a monitoring well. This well will be installed directly over the
former tank location and extend to a depth of approximately 80 to 90 feet below ground surface.
A scope of work and schedule for this investigation is presented below.
BACKGROUND
In December 1989, a 500-gallon underground gasoline tank was removed from an excavation
located at Franklin High School (refer to Figure 1). One soil sample was collected from the
excavation and the laboratory analysis of the sample showed the presence of petroleum
hydrocarbons. Based on these findings, an additional soil investigation was requested to
establish the vertical and lateral extent of contamination.
Three soil borings were drilled at Franklin High School on 19 August 1991 through and around
the excavation containing the 500-gallon gasoline tank (refer to Figure 2). B-1 was drilled to a
depth of 50 feet below ground surface directly over the area where the leak was believed to have
