Grant SITE CODE: 1122
Stockton, California
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/END) has completed the review
of the "Quarterly Report: Monitoring Well and Soil Boring Installation and Sampling" dated April 18, 1994
and has the following comments.
The data gathered from the latest phase of field work shows soil and groundwater contamination around both
former tank pit areas. Additional soil borings/monitoring wells mist be installed to fully define both the
soil and groundwater contaminant plumes.
The report recommends three additional slant borings, two near tank pit A and one near tank pit B and C.
PHS/EHD recommends, in addition to these soil borings, additional soil borings, as needed, to fully assess
the soil contaminant plumes in and around both tank pit areas. The soil borings mist adequately define the
soil lithology, the contaminant concentrations and the distribution of the contaminants in the subsurface.
Sufficient information is needed to determine appropriate cleanup alternative(s) for this site.
In addition, you may want to install vapor extraction test wells in areas found to be significantly impacted
with petroleum hydrocarbons. These wells should be used for feasibility testing. Feasibility studies are
required to gather data for evaluating the efficiency and cost of remedial alternatives for the site.
The report recommends several additional monitoring wells to further define the groundwater contaminant
plume(s). In addition to those wells mentioned in the report, PHS/END recommends the installation of an
additional well inside the warehouse located directly to the north of monitoring well MW#4. There appears
to be sufficient room in the warehouse to accommodate a small drill rig. This well is needed to define and
monitor the groundwater contaminant plume in the established downgradient direction. You may also wish to
install additional soil borings in this area, if needed, to adequately define the soil contaminant plume.
In addition, PNS/EHD recommends the installation of a monitoring well upgradient of tank pit B and C to
further define this groundwater plume.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss this Letter in more detail, please call me at (209) 468-3441.
Donna Heran, RENS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Linda Turkatte, Senior RENS Di OEM,REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
LT
c: CVRWQCB- Beth Thayer
c: SWRCB-Susan Phillips
c: Kevin Berkemeier
c: Geological Audit Services-Faith Morris-Daverin
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
