Review of MgO, Properties
When Nye measure "peroxide" reactions, we must be careful that we are not measuring
simply oxygen reactions, Many"peroxide" reagents will react with dissolved oxygen. All•
of them will react with metal peroxide compounds directly. .
To me, the entire hydrogen peroxide release issue is inciden`!al to how the materials
are beneficial to either plants or bacteria. A catalyst cannot mpke more hydrogen
peroxide and, while there will 21ways be small amounts present, none of the
experiments or observations contradict its presence all, the e)'reryely iovr vzlues
predicted by thermodynamics. Hydrogen peroxide is much more reactive than M902
and can, in fact, Kill by its release of free radical oxygen inn tie form of OH usually. Any
activity based on hydrogen peroxide is much more destructive than oxygen. l have not
seen any data that says Ch-at hydrogen peroxide is more ben_;icial to either plants or
microbes than an equal ant out-it of oxygen supplied as oxygen gas in solution. To me,
the function teat hydrogen peroxide provides is simply to prcd Ica oxygen gas in
solution 2t an uncontrolled rate and \ ith the gr ?'ter chanCZ Ci iree radical interactions.
Thus, the slo','rer release and the reduced presence of hy;:rogen peroxide are
both pluses. This does not mean that 1 am saying that hyorogen peroxide is not
beneficial. It v,-orks because it is a carrier of oxygen. I a... also not saying that
there is absolutely no hydrogen peroxide formed when m=tal peroxides are
added to hater since we can actually calculate the H.O:. I: may even be enough to
react with sensitive tests and it is ak-lays possible that reactions which remove
hydrogen peroxide will case more to be formed quickly c,nd thus, use N1902
through this intermediate even if it is only present in tiny amounts. I am also not
saying that metal peroxides do not form free radicals. V a can only say that such
formation ti,,111 be much less than from hydrogen peroxiwe- \vhich, in my opinion, is
another important distinction behveen the materials.
The bottom line,is that hydrogen peroxide is present at orders of magnitude
lower than the oxygen we have measured with oxygen electrodes and thus, is not
the carrier of the oxygen when metal peroxides releas_ oxygen. The oxygen gas
is being produced at a rate and in concentrations that far exceed any hydrogen
peroxide allowed by nature.
