The tanks from the tank pit area were removed. Definition
. and characterization revealed that not only the tank area was contaminated, but
the contaminate plume had migrated under an area where a new building was be-
i ing constructed. Initial laboratory analysis revealed TPH (Total Petroleum Hv-
drocarbon) levels of 26,000 ppm (Figure 1) using EPA Method 8015 modified.
i
{
These levels made the site actionable.
Method: Due to the extent of the contaminate plume and the fact it was located beneath a
new building under construction, bioremediation was selected as the most eco-
nomical method of remediating this site. Bio-Rem, Inc.'s Augmented In-Situ
Subsurface Bioremediation Process (tm) was selected. Bio-Rein's H-10 product '
(a blend of proprietary microaerophilic bacteria and micronutrients) was cultured
and propagated on site. The batch solution was then placed into the contaminate
plume. Routine PID readings for degradation components were taken and record-
ed (Figure 2). Bioremediation began on September 19, 1990 and readings below
"Clean-up" levels were obtained on December 10, 1990. Final samples were ob-
P p
tamed and forwarded to an independent laboratory for verification of results. U.S.
EPA Method 5030/8020 revealed nondetect results (Figure 3).
Comments: By utilizing Bio-Rem, Inc.'s Bioremediation Process and Products, the property
has no ties to a disposal site. The owners avoided considerable expense in elimi-
nating contamination from beneath a new building. In addition, the owners have
no PRP (Potentially Responsible, Party) liabilities as the gasoline and diesel con-
tarr ination was eliminated.
3
L
.
